Summary
Virginia American Water engaged R&R Contracting Utilities to supply an experienced utility crew for the installation of a new sanitary sewer main in the Lorton area of Fairfax County, Virginia. The project was part of a broader infrastructure expansion to support new development in the region.
Scope of Work
R&R deployed a 10-person crew including pipe layers, equipment operators, and a utility foreman. The team executed:
- Deep trench excavation through mixed soil conditions including clay and rock
- Installation of PVC sanitary sewer main to Virginia American Water specifications
- Construction of new manholes at specified intervals
- Active dewatering operations to maintain dry working conditions
- Coordination around existing utility crossings (gas, water, telecom)
- Backfill, compaction, and grade restoration
Challenges
The alignment crossed several existing utility corridors requiring hand excavation within tolerance zones. High groundwater conditions demanded continuous dewatering throughout the pipe laying operation. R&R's crew managed both challenges without schedule impact.
Results
- All installations passed Virginia American Water inspection on first attempt
- No utility strikes despite multiple underground crossings
- Schedule maintained through adverse soil and water conditions
- Full compliance with Virginia DEQ erosion and sediment control requirements
