WSSC Water contracted R&R Contracting Utilities to provide a complete field crew for the replacement of an aging water main serving residential neighborhoods in Montgomery County, Maryland. The existing ductile iron pipe had reached end-of-life and required full replacement to maintain reliable water service to the surrounding community.
Scope of Work
R&R deployed a 14-person crew including laborers, pipe layers, heavy equipment operators, and a utility foreman. The team performed:
- Open-cut excavation along the existing main alignment
- Removal of deteriorated ductile iron pipe
- Installation of new water main to WSSC specifications
- Individual service line reconnections to each affected property
- Hydrostatic pressure testing and system commissioning
- Full trench restoration including compaction, base, and surface paving
Challenges
The project ran through active residential streets with limited right-of-way, requiring careful traffic management and coordination with homeowners. R&R maintained water service throughout construction by installing temporary bypass connections before cutting over to the new main.
