Safety & Training

Safety requirements aren’t fine print. They’re written into the bid, and they decide who gets on your site. R&R crews are trained to meet them.

Training

How our crews are trained

R&R Contracting Utilities runs safety training programs for its crews. Our team members go through safety training videos and online courses across a range of topics, from general construction safety to the specific risks of underground utility, sitework and roadway work. Our in-house training team manages each crew's progress and certifications. We work with more than one training and certification provider, so we can match what each contract asks for.

J. J. Keller & Associates is one of them. Our crews take its courses on the hazards of working below grade — excavation, trenching and shoring, and confined spaces — along with OSHA fall protection and general workplace safety. On the road, they train in defensive driving and construction-zone safety. General contractors have written several of these courses into their subcontracts with R&R.

On the job, our foremen run job site hazard analyses (JSHA) and lead toolbox talks with their crews, in both daily and weekly safety meetings.

Bid Requirements

Safety requirements we meet on bids and contracts

These requirements come from the bids and subcontracts R&R works under on public utility and roadway projects in Maryland and the District. Our crews meet them as part of the scope we commit to.

Construction safety training from J. J. Keller

Subcontracts on DC Water’s Lead Service Line Replacement program and an Anne Arundel County force main project required R&R’s assigned crews to complete J. J. Keller courses covering construction safety basics, confined spaces, trenching and fall protection.

Certified flaggers

On work built to Maryland State Highway Administration standards, every flagger completes MDOT SHA’s Approved Flagger training course and carries the training card on the job. ATSSA flagger certification is the approved alternative.

Traffic Manager certification for work-zone crews

When a contract calls for it, as Baltimore County’s York Road water main replacement did, our work-zone traffic control crew carries the Maryland State Highway Administration Traffic Manager certification.

Site-specific safety orientation

When a general contractor or owner requires on-site, site-specific OSHA training, our crews complete it. Our proposals account for it up front.

High-visibility PPE

Hard hats, Class II high-visibility vests, eye protection, gloves and work boots, as our contracts specify, and high-visibility apparel that meets MDOT SHA policy for flaggers.

Pre-employment drug screening

Pre-employment screening and drug testing of the crews we assign, a requirement written into our subcontracts with general contractors.

Background checks for secure facilities

When a job is inside a secure facility, our crews complete the security background checks the owner requires before they report to the site.

OSHA 30-Hour Construction training

Our larger crews complete OSHA 30-Hour Construction training on the jobs that require it — OSHA’s in-depth outreach course for workers with safety responsibility on site.

Construction Health and Safety Technicians

When a contract calls for a Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST), R&R has crew members who hold the credential. It’s earned through years of field safety experience and a Board of Certified Safety Professionals exam, not a college degree, and covers job-site hazard identification, OSHA construction compliance and safety program development.

Questions general contractors ask

Are R&R’s flaggers certified?

Yes. On Maryland State Highway Administration work, R&R flaggers complete MDOT SHA’s Approved Flagger training course and carry the card on the job. ATSSA flagger certification is the approved alternative.

What safety training do R&R crews complete?

Online safety courses and training videos on excavation, trenching and shoring, confined spaces, OSHA fall protection, general workplace safety, defensive driving and construction-zone safety. J. J. Keller & Associates is one of the providers we use, and our in-house training team manages each crew's progress and certifications.
