Water Main Repair Crews | R&R Contracting
OSHA-trained crews for water main repair, replacement and relocation across Maryland and D.C. — WSSC-spec work, zero service interruptions.
In Montgomery County, Maryland, R&R replaced 1,000 feet of failing water main under active residential streets without cutting service to a single home along the route. WSSC Water held the contract; R&R supplied the field crew — laborers, pipe layers, heavy equipment operators, a utility foreman.
That's the work of a water main repair contractor in practice: OSHA-trained crews for the repair, replacement and relocation of water main systems, staffed for general contractors, municipalities, land developers, and state and federal agencies across Maryland and Washington, D.C. R&R is a Maryland-certified minority contractor, and water main work — as a water infrastructure contractor building and maintaining what runs under the street — is one piece of what the company staffs.
Water Main Repair
Leaks and breaks on an aging main come from a short list of causes: age, corrosion, ground movement, or something external pressing on the pipe — nearby excavation, a tree root working into a joint. A water main repair crew from R&R figures out which one it is before opening the street, then repairs to the size and material the main actually calls for.
Water Main Replacement
Some mains are past the point where repair makes sense — corroded through in more than one spot, undersized for current demand, or failing often enough that patch work costs more over a year than replacement would. R&R supplies water main replacement labor to pull the old line and install durable zinc-coated pipe rated to outlast it by decades.
Water Main Relocation
Mains move for practical reasons: new construction crossing the existing alignment, a street grid changing under urban development, or a realignment done for safety or long-term efficiency. R&R's crews handle the move itself — cutting in the new run, tying over active service, and abandoning or removing the old line to the owner's spec.
What a Completed Project Looks Like
On the WSSC Water job, a 14-person R&R crew handled the open-cut excavation, removed the old ductile iron main, installed the new line to WSSC specification, and reconnected service to every affected property. The crew kept water flowing throughout with temporary bypass connections ahead of the cutover, pressure-tested the finished main, and restored the trench — compaction, base, surface paving — over an 18-week schedule. The project passed WSSC inspection on its first submission.

Tell Us What's Under the Street
A water main crew needs the pipe's age, material and diameter before it can be staffed correctly. Contact R&R with what you know about the line, and we'll build the crew around it.

Does R&R design water main projects, or just supply the crew?
We supply the crew. R&R staffs to the general contractor's or utility's specification and schedule; the agency or GC holding the contract runs the project.
What decides whether a main gets repaired or replaced?
Cost, mostly. A single leak or break usually gets repaired in place. Once patch repairs on the same stretch start costing more over time than a new line would, replacement is the call — one R&R and the owner make together.
